Serials at the Library

This database is the catalogue for Saskatoon Public Library’s serials collection. We use "serial" as the inclusive term to describe works issued in parts and intended to continue indefinitely. Serials are an essential and popular library resource providing a depth of focus and immediacy unlike other print publications.

The serials collection at SPL includes:

Magazines -- domestic and foreign
Newspapers -- local, national and foreign
Annuals
Government documents
Publications received with memberships
Scientific and technical journals
Legal updating services and more

Records in this database may be searched by title or subject. The most common access is title.

Some serials are retained indefinitely and others for only a specified time period. Reference serials held at the Frances Morrison Library do not circulate but are available for use within the Library.

The serials holdings vary from Branch to Branch with not all titles available at every location. The description of each record in the database includes a list of the locations that hold the title in view. Back issues are kept in storage at Frances Morrison Library. Check with the information staff at the other Branches for the availability of back issues.

Serials have been described as having "the greatest probability of going awry, in the most parts, with the greatest frequency." Frequency changes are common as are title changes; serials cease publication, change titles, merge with other serials, split into separate parts, spawn supplements and more. Every effort is made to keep the serials database current and comprehensive.
